Standard 5.E.2 – Planning and Evaluation

5.E.2 The institution, in its planning, recognizes the need for management and technical linkages among information resource bases (e.g., libraries, instructional computing, media production and distribution centers, and telecommunications networks).

Can you think of some evidence of linkages? I suspect these other functions are performed by IT, and while we work and cooperate with them, I do not think we have any formal linkages. The Librarian does serve on the Web Committee.

Well, I know that you as librarian recognize “the need,” but I’m not sure if or how the institution does because I am no longer in that loop. The institution has you on the Budget Committee where you can see IT’s budgeting. Does the institution have you on the Web Committee or was that your idea?

What formal input does or should the Library have for the development or maintenance of computer labs? I would expect none.

The Library no longer distribute A/V equipment. The institution has no media production nor a copy center.

Do we still have a Strategic Planning Committee and are you on it?

Mike is correct that the Library and IT have no real formal linkages. I have pressed to be on the Web Committee because it is such an important portal for our electronic resources. We do not have a copy center, but do have the only copier on campus for student use. And IT now does most of the AV equipment set up, we just check out a few items on their behalf. As for the Strategic Planning Committee, the Librarian used to be on it, but it does not seem to be a functioning committee anymore. I will inquire.
I wonder if IT has an advisory committee? If so, the Librarian should be on it.

Anyone can suggest software to be installed in computer labs. However, we usually match software with what is taught it that specific room.
The IT committee has been joined with the Web committee.
